In October 1995, Muhammad Babangida founded the El-Amin Polo Team. The team is based in Kaduna, Nigeria. The team won their 13th IBB Cup in 2013. Around 600 B.C., one of the first recorded polo tournaments occurred. England held its first game in 1869. In outdoor polo, there are four players per team. They are appointed positions on offense and defense. A regulation size polo field is 300 yards long by 160 yards wide and goal posts are placed eight yards apart at each end of the field.
Muhammad Babangida also plays polo. Outdoor polo similarly goes by the name grass polo. A match consists of four to eight chukkas or chukkers, which are periods. One chukker lasts 7 minutes and 30 seconds. At the end of 7 minutes a horn blows to notify the players that 30 seconds remain in the chukker. Constructed of high-impact plastic, outdoor or grass polo balls are white in color. To suit players’ individual preferences, mallet heads are fashioned in different weights.
Muhammad is a member of the Kaduna Polo Club, which is affiliated with the Nigerian Polo Association. In indoor polo, there are three players on each team. Indoor polo includes arena, beach and snow polo. A regulation size indoor polo arena is 110 yards long by 50 yards wide, with walls being a minimum of four feet high. The goal in polo, outdoor or indoor, is to hit the ball between the two goal posts. The teams change direction after each goal.
